Today we visit the beautiful Majorelle Gardens , made famous by the late Yves St Laurent. At the gardens there is a wonderful Berber museum. It is not large but very comprehensive and it is a great opportunity to learn the Berber history and culture The rest of the day is free for exploring.
Today we travel to the city of Essaouira, a fishing port on the Atlantic coast. Essaouria a stunning city with a fortified medina that is perfectly suited for rambling. The still operational port is perfect for wandering, watching and having a seafood lunch at one of the many fish grilles set up near the wharf. Most of the old fort and ramparts date back to the 18th century and the cannons are still there in situ . The medina, souqs, ramparts, port and beach are all within easy accessible distance from each other. Essaouira’s other claim to fame is it’s one of the locations for the series Game of Thrones. A free day in Essaouira before returning to Marrakech in the evening
We leave Marrakech after an early breakfast. Today we will drive south , over the High Atlas on the road that links Marrakech to Ouarzazate, known as the gateway to the Sahara. The road takes us over the Tizi N’Tichka pass at an elevation of 2260m. This gives you a spectacular view of the High Atlas vista and there will be plenty of photo opportunities. Once over the pass and we have arrived at Ait Ben Haddou we will take a tour around this ancient fortified city which is situated on the old Caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech. It has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987 and has been the backdrop for many movies that include, Gladiator, Jewel of the Nile and Lawrence of Arabia. After we have finished our tour it is just a short drive to the city of Ouarzazate. Ouarzazate has established itself as the movie making centre of Morocco. It was here some of Lawrence of Arabia was filmed. Visit the beautiful and partly restored Taourirt Kasbah, Option to visit Atlas Film Corporation studios if time permits. Overnight in hotel
Another early start . Today we will drive to Merzouga, in the Sahara via the stunning Todhra Gorge. A ravine with 300m high rock walls of orange limestone. On the road to the gorge we will pass green palmeraies and Berber villages. Leaving the gorge we make our way to Merzouga, in time to take a camel ride to a luxury desert camp . Here you will enjoy fine dining in the desert and be entertained by Berber musicians
Waking early in time to watch the sunrise we return. after breakfast, on the camels to Merzouga where our transport will be waiting to take us to Imilchil . Imilchil is a pretty village in the High Atlas. It is here that the annual marriage festival takes place in September. Overnight will be in a Berber guest house
Today we travel to the Imperial city of Fes ,crossing the Atlas cedar to the plains of Sais, before arriving at your Riad in the medina of Fes
Today you will have a guided city tour, visiting the ceramics works, leather works, and many historical buildings. Fes has some fine examples of Moorish architecture.
Tonight we spend the night at another Imperial city – Meknes, the smallest of all the imperial cities. But first we take a tour of Volubilis, a partly excavated Berber and Roman city that dates back to the 3rd century BC ,and commonly considered as the ancient capital of the kingdom of Mauretania. Overnight in Riad
From Meknes we travel to our final destination and last of the imperial cities- Casablanca. But first we will stop in Rabat, the Capital of Morocco, and visit the mausoleum of the late King Mohammed V. The building is considered a masterpiece of modern Alaouite dynasty architecture. Near by is the unfinished Hassan Tower begun in 1195. Leaving Rabat we travel on to Casablanca If time permits you can visit the beautiful Hassan II Mosque. Overnight in hotel
